Great Ad: Heinenken Gets Fresh

Posted by Jeromy

hehehehe. Sometimes a great beer ad can give me those junior high giggles. This witty advertisement from Heineken is one of those. A reminder that great ads draw from cultural symbols and allusions.

Great Advice for a Graphic Design Student

Academy of Art Sacramento Group Photo

I came across this blog post over at Frank Chimero’s site. It has some great advice for current graphic design students and those just entering the design/studio work force. As a MFA student at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, a lot of his words resonated with me and so I thought I’d pass it on.

For me, these gems stood out:

If you can’t draw as well as someone, or use the software as well, or if you do not have as much money to buy supplies, or if you do not have access to the tools they have, beat them by being more thoughtful. Thoughtfulness is free and burns on time and empathy.

The best communicators are gift-givers.

Think of every project as an opportunity to learn, but also an opportunity to teach.

Helvetica is nice too, but it won’t turn water to wine.

Thanks Frank. Timely words.

Living Like a Muslim

Posted by Jeromy
at July 16, 2010

One time a devout, Bible believing Christian approached Jesus. “Lord, what must I do to live life to the fullest?”

“Well, what does it say in that Bible you read?” Jesus replied.

“To love you will my entire heart, soul, mind, and strength. And to love my fellow human as I love myself.”

“Correct. Live this way and you will truly live.”

Wanting to make himself look good, the Christian asked Jesus, “Who is my fellow human?”

Jesus replied,

“A single woman was driving on an old rural road late at night. When she stopped at a stop sign three thugs jumped out of the car in front of her, pulled her out, beat and raped her, took anything of value and left her on the side of the road.

“An evangelical pastor approached the intersection, saw the woman, and ignoring her, he kept driving.

“Shortly afterwards an Episcopal priest drove up, saw the woman, and not wanting to get involved, she too kept driving.

“But a Muslim man, as he drove towards the woman, saw her and a deep compassion rose up in him. He pulled over, removed his jubba and clothed the woman in it. He lifted her beaten body into his car and drove her to the closest ER, staying by her bedside the whole night. Needing to leave the next morning, he left his credit card to cover all her bills until she fully recovered. A week later, on his way back home, he returned to the hospital to see how she was doing.

“Which of these people treated this woman as a fellow human?”

The biblical Christian said, “The person who cared for her.”

“Then go and follow the Muslim’s example.”

Vintage Ad: Carrot Man

Posted by Jeromy
at July 14, 2010

Is it just me or is this vintage J.A. Simmers carrot seed-packet ad a bit creepy? What I really like is the carrot hair growing out of his body. Somehow, I don’t picture my wife flocking to this seed packet at Lowes.
