Paula Scher: Chaos Under Control
Paula Scher definitely has her own style. Her hand designed maps seem to me her most notable work. I found myself both drawn into and repulsed by the clutter of her maps, with words and colors clashing here and there. Though there is a sense of chaos, there is also an intrigue that pulls you into the map wanting to read the little details. The map that pulled me in the most was her Tsunami map. They typography of the ocean rippled out from the Tsunami’s center to show the expanse and spread of the current. One of the things I like most about her maps is that they are her views of the “world”. They are somewhat physically accurate but they contain her fingerprints and artistic interpretation.
Some of her other work, especially her posters, almost have a postmodern dada feel to them with words and type flying out of mouths and tossed on the page with little regard for the sacred grid. Her work is definitely recognizable.
And yet with all the free-spirited designs she has created, she is still able to create a lasting brand like Citibank’s logo. Which goes to show that most of her free-flowing designs are intentional and not based on ignorance of the traditional forms and rules of graphic design.
